this wasnt meant to be a moritorium on rape
July 2nd, 2011 on 8:33 pm
how about the same ad done for a gay/bi audience into hunky men, with the cute but stupid jockbody stud standing in for the dumb blonde. Hell he could even have blonde hair, blue eyes, and same cookiecutter perfect nose
July 2nd, 2011 on 8:56 pm
Hi missmallory I don’t know surfer bros. But for each example of a dumb male surfer there are 10 dumb blond female jokes/depictions. As for worse commercials , maybe that is true. But I want to highlight this ad for making light of serious social problems. For centuries there has been violence against women which is justified by saying 1) women are stupid and 2) they are only sexual objects anyway. This commercial feeds the very mentality that men have long used to beat/rape women.
July 2nd, 2011 on 9:18 pm
@LilleGeneva What about surfer bros? they are always depicted as blonde tan and stupid. There are way worse commercials and life issues to focus on besides this one vonage commercial
July 2nd, 2011 on 9:31 pm
@LilleGeneva I beg to differ. “…as most blondes in these jokes are female, although male variations also exist…”, straight from Wikipedia, even society thinks that “not all blonde women are stupid”, and “some blonde men are stupid”. I’m sure that stereotypes were targeted for this commercial, not as a sexist demeanor.
And I disagree, people aren’t that easily influenced enough to beat up women for fun after watching a 30 second advertisement for landline telephones.
July 2nd, 2011 on 10:18 pm
@LilleGeneva It only seems that way because you misinterpret the ad that way. If someone as simple enough on the internet perceives this ad as a clear and obvious derogatory definition for women, then how come nobody else can, especially if this commercial is nationally spread? No real complaints or lawsuits have been made against this commercial or lack thereof.
1) No, it obviously isn’t ok, but who threw that box? A man or woman?
2) Again, women aren’t ALWAYS seen as sexual by EVERYBODY.
July 2nd, 2011 on 10:57 pm
As for the idea that “this commercial targets the blonde stereotype of society to be considered “stupid”, male or female,” I could not disagree more. There is no male version of the “stupid blond” stereotype.
I appreciate your point that real events deserve attention more than ones on t.v. But we have to take seriously the way that t.v., commercials, etc. can affirm beliefs, attitudes that drive inhumane behaviors that destroy lives everyday. This commercial says: hurt women = funny.
July 2nd, 2011 on 11:34 pm
Hi RockerBoy,
I agree that actual violence against people is worse than violence depicted in ads. But you are missing how often ads (and other media) make light of things that deserve serious attention. Violence against women (whether beating or rape) is a world wide problem which is made easier by the commonly held belief that 1) it is ok to hurt women and 2) women are objects for pleasure. This commercial reinforces both of those ideas.
July 3rd, 2011 on 12:01 am
@LilleGeneva For 4., read my last reply to you.
Again, this isn’t really targeted at “violence toward women”, there are a lot of other real issues out there that deal with that, and to consider this advertisment as one of them is just a waste of time, especially when it clearly isn’t. This commercial targets the blonde stereotype of society to be considered “stupid”, male or female.
And if you still think I’m wrong, don’t be shy to reply directly to me.
July 3rd, 2011 on 12:59 am
@LilleGeneva “1, a hot looking women (an other words, a sexual object)”, being sexually attractive to someone or something is all based on preference and opinion. Not EVERYBODY will think this lady is sexually attractive.
“2. is hit in the head”, most likely to try and get here attention, not to imply violence.
“3.and it is ok she is hit in the head. why? because she is stupid”, read my last reply to you.
“4. violence on the women is made funny again by having here swim with shark”
July 3rd, 2011 on 1:34 am
You are missing the larger picture, Rockerboy. This commercial, which appears to be harmless, makes light of a serious social problem: violence against women. Consider the main elements the commercial presents:
1. a hot looking women (in other words, a sexual object)
2. is hit in the head
3.and it is ok she is hit in the head. why? because she is stupid
4. violence on the woman is made funny again by having her swim with sharks.
July 3rd, 2011 on 2:17 am
@LilleGeneva It’s an advertisment. It would be less offensive to use a blonde women and call her stupid than to use someone with an involuntary mental retardation birth defect.
July 3rd, 2011 on 2:55 am
To my friends who still think the themes in this commercial are harmless: please keep your eyes open for examples of violence against women. As I am sure you are aware, a young man recently attempted to kill a successful woman with blonde hair in Tucson whom he found “stupid and unintelligent.”
Is it really so harmless to depict women as this commercial does? Does seeing the women in this commercial have her head hit really ok with you?
July 3rd, 2011 on 3:07 am

@LilleGeneva shut the fuck up
July 3rd, 2011 on 5:40 am
So the comparison with men dancing in a way that embarrasses them does not add up. Man dancing foolishly does not evoke any reality or history related to abuse of men. You need to open up your perspective and see things more critically.
It is interesting how you use the term “Femminazi.” That’s a term used by men who find outspoken women intimidating. So I suppose that the notion that a women might stand up and shed light on injustices against them troubles you? Why is that?
July 3rd, 2011 on 6:18 am
I would agree with you Rockchic if there was not a history of violence against women in virtually all human societies. To make light of a person being knocked over and then being attacked/assaulted is offensive when you consider the reality of women being literally knocked over and assaulted so often in everyday life. When you become aware of how common rape or beating women is then this makes more sense.
July 3rd, 2011 on 6:25 am
@LilleGeneva WOW! Are you seriously offended by this commercial!?! It’s a joke. It’s just poking fun at the stereotypical dumb beach blonde. Obviously not all girls are, or r thought of like that. Don’t be a FemmiNazi.
P.S. Just so you know, you could technically be the same way about the Vonage commercial with the husband dancing in the background; That all guys are morons and the wife knows more. But of course most people understand that it is a joke and don’t get there undies in a bunch.
July 3rd, 2011 on 7:22 am
man, this broad is dumb as hell!!!! vonage commercials were the shit back in the day.
July 3rd, 2011 on 8:21 am
Wow. Yet another commercial in which women are expendable commodities.
Let’s consider content here:
1. Women are dumb (she thinks sharks are dolphins! that is hilarious!)
2. Not worth paying attention to (it’s so funny how the guy totally ignores the dumb girl! )
3. Violence against women isn’t only acceptable but funny (she’s actually going to swim with the sharks!)
4. Women at least not totally useless: there are good as sexual objects.
Thanks Vonage. Very humane, intelligent ad.
