It means to have a foot note. It’s sort of a catch phrase now. With Barry Bonds, they are referring to looking in the record book and it saying…
Career Home Runs : Barry Bonds 762*
*Bonds was accused of using steroids during his career. And also he eats babies.
Maybe not the last part, but you get the idea

It means to cast doubt over it. Roger Maris had his single season HR record marked with an asterik by the then Commisioner (who was Babe’s ghostwriter) because he took more games to do it than Babe Ruth did.
So now in baseball, an asterik is used to mark something that was believed to have been acheived with an unfair advantage.

to “put in asterisk” next to a record signifies that additional information accompanies this record (records from an extra inning game, a shortened season due to strike, etc). Anything that might explain why this record is different from the original record.
In the case of Bonds, the phrase means that Bonds record would be diminished in its stature due to his alleged use of performance enhancing supplements.

An asterisk is put next to something that is supposed to guide your attention toward a special note, or remark about that subject or item, etc.
For example: Cooperstown might look like this:
Barry Bonds 756* career Home Runs
*= Used steroids and lied about it

it means the record might be tainted

how old are you?!?

ok ummm…i dont have any clue what that means….im only 13!

It denotes that there is more to that particular record:
Most Career Home Runs: Barry Bonds 762*
Most World Series Titles: New York Yankees: 26*
* Found to be using performance enhancing drugs.

it means he has the most homeruns but also accused of taking steriods,
and the astirisk was put on the ball that he broke the record with by the owner of the ball and a national vote. Bonds says he won’t go to the HOF if that ball is displayed – I doubt he ever gets to HOF if convicted
